Guess I'm getting there... I actually made it to Thing #5. I read an article called 11 reasons why Library 2.0 exists and matters by John Blyberg. I found it by doing a Google search for "Library 2.0". I thought this article was very interesting and insightful and he made some very good points about the future of libraries and how they must keep up with the times or they could essentially become extinct in the future. I really related to the quote he had from Sarah Houghton:
“Library 2.0 simply means making your library’s space (virtual and physical) more interactive, collaborative, and driven by community needs. Examples of where to start include blogs, gaming nights for teens, and collaborative photo sites. The basic drive is to get people back into the library by making the library relevant to what they want and need in their daily lives…to make the library a destination and not an afterthought.”
It seems to me that this quote is pretty much it, in a nutshell and I also agree with his statement that:
"the most important part of her definition is “making the library relevant”
Also, his closing statement...
"So, finally, what is Library 2.0? Is it just a collection of ideas? Is it a movement? A revolution? Maybe a little bit of all those things, and more. It may not be the right label, but whatever IT is, it IS."
I find it interesting how technology and the future generations are causing so many changes with everything, including the many uses of such a traditional place as the community library. I guess it is a good thing that the public libraries are trying to keep up with the pace of this ever fast paced changing world... if they didn't, then they would surely become obsolete.
